History of St James Anglican Church Thornbury

St James, East Thornbury, began as a weatherboard mission and branch church of the parish of Holy Trinity, Thornbury, under its first vicar, the Reverend Briggs. Within ten years, the separate parish of St James Thornbury was established in 1924.

1924

Within ten years, the separate parish of St James Thornbury is established.

1996

The parishes of St Aidan’s Northcote and St James are incorporated into the new parish of St James’ on the current site.

1969

The congregation builds the church we have today from the proceeds of the St Aidan’s property. The old St James’ weatherboard building becomes the church hall.

2001

the parish of St James, Thornbury, was merged with the already combined parish of All Saints, Northcote and St Paul’s, Fairfield, to create the Parish of South Darebin.

2024

St James celebrates 100 years since it was established as a separate parish.
